Speedo Challenge

Braam Roux works for Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Gauteng and was dared to cycle in a speedo on 18 July 2015 at 08:00 from The Country Bomo, Muldersdrift to Clearwater Mall, Roodepoort. Thank you to Farrell Kurensky who did the challenge with Braam and raised funds for Tiaan’s wheelchair.

Why is he doing this? Because of Tiaan van Staden, 9 years of age who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive neuromuscular disorder causing muscle wasting and weakness, with the voluntary muscles being affected first. The disorder is caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene and affects around 1 in 3500 boys. Progressive muscle weakness of the legs and pelvis is observed first, associated with a loss of muscle mass. Eventually this weakness spreads to the arms, neck and other areas. The muscles of the hips, pelvic area, thighs, shoulders and calf muscles are worst affected. Tiaan has reached the stage that he is unable to walk and needs a motorised wheelchair to give him his independence.

We have a waiting list of people who need specialised equipment, and without the goodness of individuals and companies we are unable to assist people affected with this dreadful disease. We are grateful for any support and would like to make an appeal to the public to support our cause.

Please let us know if you would like to dare anybody you know to do something out of the ordinary. We will put the dare and pictures on our Facebook page and website. The person who took on the challenge can decide what amount should be paid to our charity.
